An Old Guy's Random Rememberings #12

Time flies when you're having fun. I ran across a doorhanger that I made several years ago, and thought, "How could it have been that long ago?" On September of last year (2008), we braved the hurricane warnings to celebrate a 50th "anndiversity" (or is it annadversity?) in the park down by the River Trail.

FORTY TWO? NOW WHAT DO I DO?
9/14/00

YESTERDAY I ARRIVED AT WORK WITH THE PLAN TO GO TO HEARTFIELD’S FAIRLY
EARLY IN THE MORNING, AND GET A DELIVERY IN GEORGETOWN. AT ALMOST THREE
O’CLOCK, MY PLAN HIT ME HARD. HAVING BEEN CAUGHT UP IN THE EXCITEMENT OF
THE DAY, I HAD NOT GONE YET!

IT’S BEEN FORTY TWO YEARS, NOW, SINCE KATHALEE AND I STARTED HANGING OUT
TOGETHER ON A PERMANENT BASIS. SINCE OUR OLDEST DAUGHTER WAS FORTY ONE
ON JULY 11, I GUESS IT’S FOR THE BEST THAT IT’S BEEN THAT LONG.

YESTERDAY, SEPT. 13, IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THAT DAY IN 1958 WHEN TWO TRIM
YOUNG PEOPLE APPEARED AT ST. ELIZABETH’S CHURCH IN ALICE, ALONG WITH THEIR
YOUTHFUL PARENTS, SISTERS, COUSINS AND AUNTS, FRIENDS, AND VARIOUS PARTY-
CRASHERS, TO TIE THE KNOT.

MONSIGNOR MILLER HAD TOLD US WE SHOULD WAIT UNTIL WE GOT OUTSIDE TO
KISS, AND SO WE DID. THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO ASKED US ABOUT THAT LATER.
NEITHER OF US EVER TOOK THE TROUBLE TO LEARN IF THAT WAS COMMON PRACTICE,
OR IF IT WAS JUST MONSIGNOR MILLER’S WAY OF THROWING HIS WEIGHT AROUND.

BACK AT HEARTFIELD’S, I FOUND A NICE BUNCH OF FLOWERS THAT THEY HAD
ALREADY MADE UP, AND PUT THEM IN THE PICKUP. SINCE IT WAS A NICE, CLOUDY
DAY, NOT TOO HOT, AND THE SUN WAS NOT SHINING DIRECTLY ON THE FLOWERS, I
LEFT THEM THERE WHILE I WENT BACK INTO THE OFFICE. I SAY TO YOU, “PEOPLE,
DON’T DO THAT!” BY THE TIME I GOT HOME, THE ROSES WERE DROOPY, AND WERE
DROPPING PETALS LIKE CRAZY. IT WAS NOT A PRETTY SIGHT. I PRESENTED THEM
ANYWAY, AND MY WONDERFUL WIFE MERELY SAID “NEXT TIME YOU SHOULD TAKE
THEM INSIDE” AS SHE GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTED THEM, AND ONLY SMILED WHEN I
INFORMED HER THAT I THINK THE NEW GIRL AT HEARTFIELD’S OVERCHARGED ME.
