SPRING AND FALL
12/20/06
LAST MONDAY I REACHED AN IMPORTANT GOAL IN MY LIFE. FOR
SIXTY-PLUS YEARS I HAVE BEEN HAUNTED BY THE TUNE OF MY FOURTH GRADE
TEACHER MISS MAMIE GUSMAN’S FAVORITE MUSICAL NUMBER. I
STARTED IN MY YOUNG LIFE BY INTERJECTING THE PHRASE “POTATO STUDY”, AND
MUCH LATER, PERHAPS IN MY TEENS, THE PHRASE “CORNMEAL
MUFFINS” POPPED INTO MY HEAD.
ON MONDAY OF THIS WEEK, I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT THE PHRASES,
ONLY TO FIND THAT I COULDN’T REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE
MUSICAL PIECE. I TOLD MY WIFE THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS CALLED
“MINUET” AND SHE ALMOST LAUGHED IN MY FACE. “THAT WOULD BE
LIKE CALLING A PIECE ‘WALTZ’ OR ‘SONNET’. I REALLY DOUBT THAT
WOULD BE THE CORRECT NAME”.
AFTER TRYING FOR CONSIDERABLE TIME LAST NIGHT WHEN I SHOULD
BE SLEEPING, THE NAME FINALLY CAME TO THE SURFACE OF MY
WEARY MIND. WHEN I STARTED GOOGLING “HUMORESQUE”, I FOUND
IT QUICKLY.
IF YOU WILL SING THE FOLLOWING TO THE OPENING BARS OF
DVORAK’S HUMORESQUE #7 IN G FLAT MAJOR, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO
SHARE IN MY DELIGHT AT FINALLY REACHING THIS SIGNIFICANT GOAL.
I’M TITLING THIS LYRIC,
“THE PLANTING AND THE HARVEST”
ALL THE FIELDS ARE COLD AND MUDDY,
HOW I HATE POTATO STUDY,
I SO LONG FOR ANY PLACE BUT HERE....
TURKEY BAKED WITH CROUTON STUFFING,
PUMPKIN PIE AND CORNMEAL MUFFINS,
AUTUMN IS MY FAV’RITE TIME OF YEAR.
IS THAT NOT WORTH SIXTY YEARS OF INTENSE CONCENTRATION?
